A Tale of Conspicuous (over)Consumption

This is really not a blog about food...really.  This photo was snapped late summer 2009 when scouting NYC for awnings and signage for a semplice storefront overhaul (still not done).  A friend and I returned to this spot Sunday, during a rare gift of free time away from the shop in December (clearly, the only upside of retail in recession).  The result...a day of blissful (over)consumption.

After a cozy brunch at Elephant & Castle on Greenwich Avenue...smoked salmon, country eggs on divine hash browns and tarragon-laced creamed spinach, an omelette loaded with fresh basil and tomato, and a pair of mimosas...we strolled down the block for, what turned out to be, an afternoon of conversation, sips and slow grazing.

Gottino is a must-linger kind of spot.  An all-day kind of spot.  Perhaps it is a wine bar open 'til 2am...a brighter Italian counterpoint to Mario Batali's darker Spanish Bar Jamon...but step inside and you feel you are pulling up a stool to the farmhouse counter of Chef Jody Williams.  The only thing that fools you into thinking otherwise is the no-nonsense staff that bustles about behind the long bar to the hushed, sharp direction of Jody Williams herself.  There were glasses to polish, olives to plate, proscuitto to shave, wine to decant and bowties to tie.

We lingered long enough to see the shift-change.  We lingered long enough to progress from blood orange mimosas to Oddero Barolo.  We lingered long enough to crack handfuls of walnuts and hazelnuts from the bar baskets.  We lingered long enough to learn that Brendan and Mary both grew up on the water...he in Sandwich,  she in Southampton.  We lingered long enough to progress from Walnut Pesto Crostini to Rabbit Pot Pie.  We lingered long enough to hear that Jake Gyllenhaal's twin was really from France via LA, looking quite at home on his first day behind the bar.  We lingered long enough to know that we will return sooner rather than later.

The Marvel of the Macaron & More

One step inside the Paris monument to sugar, Laduree, and I was hooked on macarons. It certainly didn't hurt that they were lined up like little sugar soldiers in a color palette that exists only in a sugar-coated world. While they may be too pretty to eat, a bite into the melt-away meringue and you quickly get over the two-bite destruction of the candy-like cabochons. I was thrilled to enjoy macarons stateside at the now closed Payard Cafe and still at Thomas Keller's Bouchon Bakery (shown). But, we are bringing them closer to home at semplice in November...stay tuned!

But this really isn't about macarons...it is about the impact of the pastry and the patisserie on one designer, Susan Hochbaum. We have had the pleasure of having Susan as a semplice patron since our opening in 1998. We have also enjoyed the sales of the books Susan has collaborated on, including A Stiff Drink and A Close Shave and Black + White. But, it is Susan's published viewpoint on the architecture of the French pastry that we are most anticipating...view it here.

Grab a macaron.

Simply Perfection, Avec Eric

Welcome to The Simple Syrup, a seat-of-the-pants, small-snippets blog dedicated to all things we adore in our little "semplice" world.  If  you enjoy our shop of (almost) 12 years in Montclair, NJ then perhaps you will find some interest in our obsessions of the moment both here at semplice and beyond.

First up, a show we are addicted to...
Avec Eric on PBS, Saturday nights at 7pm. Eric Ripert truly is a rock star, the show is beautifully produced and his induction range is crazy cool. Each week he takes you on an informative culinary journey and ends in his kitchen with a practical approach to what he's learned...without the Le Bernardin-caliber mise en place and sans teeth-grinding jargon like "EVOO" and "stoup."

Enjoy a webisode for a taste, highly recommend Eric's visit with
Dan Barber of Stone Barns at Blue Hill.
